I guess there must be a lot of opinions in this group about best traction options. Here is an absurdly detailed explanation of my favorite, sheet metal screws in the soles of old shoes: http://www.growthexperiencecoaching.co/articles/screw-shoes-running-on-packed-snow-and-ice

Thanks for setting up the challenge! I really benefited even though I missed a lot of days (my logging was far worse than my lifting). I missed a lot more leg days than arm days so I probably need to reevaluate whether it makes sense for me to adhere to the rule of doing legs after running, and just try to do things when I can, with the knowledge that I will have plenty of days off.

    Apparently it’s not just me:

But also I had not found where to switch off “smart” data recording and turn it to every second, which is what I would always want unless deeply concerned about battery life.

I have been using this logic, using GPS+GLONASS for a while. My past few runs have had lousy accuracy, and today’s was outright atrocious. I’m switching to GPS+Galileo just because something has to change. I’m open to any other ideas or superstitions but might contact Garmin.

Anyone want an 8-lb medicine ball? I don’t need Leo throwing it down the stairs again.

Does the 935 have “Virtual Run” mode that can talk to zwift, or is that something that was only added for x45? Pace Pro is only x45, right?

I love my 245, but I miss having an altimeter, which the 945 has. I’m sure the extra battery life of the 945 could come in handy. It seems like both have a decent set of fancy doodads that are an upgrade from the previous generation. Given the price and size difference, I’m maybe not too sad about ending up without the altimeter.

This seems cool, but only the audio comes through for me, none of the video. I’ll try browsers other than firefox and see if it makes a difference.

I now realize I needed to think more carefully about using strava segments for this purpose. I dismissed the idea before posting my question because it seems to get the altitude information from the GPS data used to create the segment, so when the segment at the north end of the B-line was created, it used totally bonkers altitude data, and we seem to be stuck with that.

The grade on Rogers road is way less than it used to be, so the existing strava segment is now wrong. But maybe I can create a new (private) segment. I think there are 3 possibilities for where new altitude data can come from: watch altimeter, map data (not updated yet, but also not accurately sensitive to the original difference between sidewalk and road), and triangulation with GPS satellites. I think I’d have to use a GPS with an altimeter. My current one doesn’t have it, but my old one does. So I’ll head back out there to try again 🙂

I have a slightly related question. What do you think is the best way to determine the grade of a hill? I often use MapMyRun to get an estimate. I’m not sure how accurate that is, but I’d be happy to do better. I really don’t trust it for the recently remodeled hill on Rogers up from the roundabout at Winslow and High. I’m thinking it might now be a fun hill to do repeats on, but I don’t have a great sense of how it compares to other options (which are abundant in this location).

I have tried Zwifting with the treadmill a few times. I’m reasonably happy with it. Since the treadmill talks to zwift on its own, I don’t see much need for the Runn Smart. As far as I can tell it would just give me more speed accuracy. The difference would be most significant for speedwork, since the treadmill is pretty slow to ramp up and ramp down speed, but Zwift sees an instantaneous change in speed. Since we’re emphasizing pacing our workouts by feel rather than relying on specific numbers, and I have a monogamous relationship with this treadmill, I don’t feel much need for more accuracy. I haven’t tried using my forerunner 245 virtual run mode to transmit to Zwift instead. My experience with using a Garmin on a treadmill is it’s not just less accurate, but also less precise – I can probably appear to be running faster by running with a higher cadence. Maybe I should just take advantage of that incentive to work on cadence!

Do you know of anyone who has run with a stryd power meter?

To follow up, it seems like the latest Sole F63, F65, F80 and F85 treadmills all have bluetooth that makes connecting to zwift very easy. Also TIL several of the latest garmin watches, including the FR 245 have a “virtual run” mode that enables connecting to zwift by bluetooth. I haven’t tried that yet but it would be one option for including cadence in my zwift strava data.

Buying stuff from Dicks is a really unpleasant experience, but it seemed to be quicker than buying directly from Sole. Dicks offers in-home installation. Sole has discontinued in-home installation due to covid. The shipping company and Dicks disagreed about who was responsible for providing someone to do the in-home installation and apparently it’s not easy to come up with someone who is qualified. I’m not sure they succeeded. It took the guys a while to put the treadmill together. At one point they asked me for a shim because they didn’t realize that these things pretty much always have some adjustment knobs to compensate for uneven floors. Leo found a screw that was totally loose. I’m not sure if having them do the installation was the right choice, but it hasn’t fallen apart yet.

There are so many new trails and sidepaths in Bloomington now. I would try to log as many miles as possible on new trails and sidepaths, including those that are just runnable but not yet completed like the new sidepath on Sare. I’m sure it won’t happen but I really want to go check out the trail from Ellettsville to the existing part of the Karst Greenway.
